Bicycling and Other Active Modes

No Car?

No Problem!

Colorado State University offers a variety of options for getting around campus, promoting sustainable and active transportation. Whether you prefer biking, using e-scooters or e-bikes, skateboarding, or walking, we have resources and infrastructure to support your chosen mode of travel.

Bicycling

Colorado State University is a Platinum level Bicycle Friendly University where more than 50% of students bring a bike to campus and use their bike as a form of transportation.

  • CSU has more than 5.5 miles of dedicated bike trails.
  • There are 18,000 bike parking spaces and two card-reader accessed bike parking shelters on campus. Know a good spot for a bicycle rack, contact our Active Transportation team and request a bicycle rack.
  • Free education programs are available to teach people how to ride, maintain their bikes, rules of the road, how to ride in various weather conditions and more.
  • All bikes on campus (including e-bikes) must be registered. Registration is a one-time fee of $10 and can be completed at the CSU Police Station or at The Spoke.
  • The Spoke, located in Laurel Village, is a student-run bike shop that offers low-cost bike repair services and there are also 12 bike fix-it stations around campus.
  • Long-term bike rentals and bike storage options are available through The Spoke.
  • Bicyclists must obey the rules of the road and dismount in the pedestrian-only areas of campus.

E-Scooters

and E-Bikes

Whether using a Spin shared device or a personal one, e-scooters and e-bikes are a fast, easy way to get from class to class, run errands, or even a short commute.

Spin

Spin e-bike and e-scooter share program is available for trips on and off campus. Spin users download an app to access devices and begin and end trips. Spin users pay an unlock fee and then pay by the minute.

Additional Information
  • Download the Spin app.
  • Spin Access is a program that provides discounted rates on Spin trips for income-qualified users.
  • Learn more about Spin Access on Spin’s website or see the City of Fort Collins’ Spin Access User Guide.
  • Read Spin FAQs at the City of Fort Collins’ Spin page.

Personal E-Bikes & E-Scooters

Privately-owned electric scooters and electric bikes are treated as bicycles on CSU campuses.

Owners should do the following:
  • Register their e-scooter or e-bike with CSU Police ($10 one-time fee).
  • Park at bike racks and use a lock.
  • Operate their e-scooter or e-bike in bike lanes and shared use paths on campuses (not on sidewalks).
  • Obey dismount and slow zones.

Skateboarding

& Walking

Skateboarding

Skateboarding (or longboarding) can be an inexpensive and practical way to access the core of campus from a nearby residence, from a transit stop, or a parked vehicle.

  • Skateboarders travel on sidewalks and shared use trails and must travel at controlled speeds to create a safe environment for everyone.
  • Skateboarders are required to adhere to pedestrian-only areas/dismount zones and use good judgment when areas are congested.
  • E-skateboarders should ride in bike lanes and avoid riding on sidewalks or shared pathways unless it is safe to do so.
  • Note that skateboards are not allowed on roadways off campus as they are considered toys by state law.
Additional Information:
  • Skateboards and e-skateboards are not allowed in academic buildings and should be parked and locked at skateboard racks provided throughout campus.
  • Don’t see a rack close to your destination? Make a request for your location to be evaluated for a skateboard rack.
  • CSU provides bike maintenance stations across campus, which are also equipped with tools to help you fix your board.

Walking

Walking is one of the most popular ways to get around campus and can also be a great way to get to campus. CSU takes pride in our ability to support pedestrians and strives to keep walkways convenient, safe and accessible throughout campus.

  • Sidewalks and dedicated pedestrian trails are throughout campus. Learn more about the pedestrian-only/dismount zones on campus.
  • Get exercise while you work and make your next meeting a walking meeting. Check out this guide on how to effectively host a walking meeting.
Additional Information:
  • Learn how CSU’s Master Plan has prioritized the pedestrian experience.
  • SafeWalk is offered from dusk to dawn, 7 days a week, as a free service by CSUPD. CSUPD provides a safe escort from any point on campus to another campus location or a location within a three-block radius of Foothills, Main, and South Campus.
